https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNoDtTjjifo Africa's first full-length animation fantasy film and the world's first "junkmation" production, The Legend of the Sky Kingdom, has been completed and is now ready for release.
Produced by Sunrise Productions, the film was made in Zimbabwe between 1999 and 2002 by 15 young people, with a passion for movies and a fresh vision for the future.
The key to the freshness of The Legend of the Sky Kingdom is "junkmation" - a uniquely African art form. In Africa, nothing is thrown away. All across the continent, skilled craftsmen take pieces of junk and transform them into useful items.
Because of the film's extremely low budget (less than US$300 000), the option of purchasing the high-tech equipment needed to control the intricate and precise camera moves was not possible. The development of a homemade camera motion was to occupy the team for nigh on two years.
Local musicians Andrew Baird and Henry Olonga produced an African-flavoured, organic score. Rick Grebno, using a digital audio workstation, produced sound effects in Zimbabwe.
